Sitting in the water waiting for waves is where I usually get my best ideas. I'll take the idea of being in water, or close to water, and try to express on the canvas more of what I am feeling than what I actually see. This expressionism of sorts has been the goal of my artwork since I began painting in elementary school in northern California. The ocean then was already very much a part of my life even before I picked up a brush. I learned that discipline and practice of oil painting by painting waves and beaches. The ocean and its surroundings have always been my subjects of choice. I moved to Oahu when I was 18 and instantly fell in love with life so close to the water. Since then I've tried to convey through my artwork the many changing scenes and moods of the islands. Capturing lighting, texture, and detail are greatest priorities when rendering an image. The goal is to successfully communicate to the viewer thoughts and feelings drawn from experience in nature. I currently live with my wife Megan on the windward coast of Oahu, close to the water, close to the waves. Aloha and enjoy! -Jeff
